I only knew Ernie from visiting him with Joan at Abernathy Laurels. He was so kind and I could tell that he loved Joan dearly. By our conversations, he loved all of his family. He talked fondly of their years of dancing and I knew that him and Joan were really good at it. Also. He made me laugh when he talked about moving down South and there not being any ballroom dancing in the local area so they started square dancing. If only there were videos then. Im sure he will be missed by all that knew him.

I met Ernie and Joanie in 1986 at a “meet and greet” for tennis players. We set up a match with other tennis players for Wednesday nights. We were partners in doubles matches for almost 30 years.
Spent many hours with Ernie and you could not know a nicer guy. My wife and I had many enjoyable Christmas parties at their home on Lake Norman. He would always make a wooden puzzle or game for each couple. He and Joanie would pass out the gifts after dinner and would instruct us to play the game or solve the puzzle before dessert. He told me he had at least 2 years gifts planned ahead.
He was quick witted, funny and competitive.
I will miss Ernie very much, he had a wonderful life, lived to the fullest. I shall think of him whenever I play or watch tennis.

Craig and I would echo everything David Dalmas said, and we were also privileged to be at those Christmas parties. While I did not play tennis with him, I did attend an exercise class with him. He was always there, cheerfully greeting folks. He persevered in this class even after serious illness. He will be missed.
