Ernest Cleveland “E.C” Hunt Jr.

Photo of EC Hunt, JrErnest Cleveland “E.C.” Hunt, Jr., 96, a recent resident of Denver, NC passed away on July 25, 2018 in Novant Health Huntersville Hospital after a short illness. Born on September 21, 1921 in Henderson, (Vance County), NC, he was the son of the late Ernest Cleveland and Virginia Pendleton Hunt.

Mr. Hunt graduated from Henderson High School, Henderson, NC in the class of 1940 and then graduated in 1949 with a Mechanical Engineering Degree from NC State University (on the GI Bill). He was a member of the Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity Mr. Hunt served honorably and proudly as a 1st Lt. in the 8th Air Force of the United States Army Air Corps in WWII, flying B17s out of England. Following the war, he continued serving our country in the United States Air Force Reserves until December of 1956.

Mr. Hunt was Chairman and CEO of Thermo Industries, Inc. until his retirement. He was a long-time contributor to NC State University funding several student scholarships. He funded the E.C. Hunt Board Room in the Poole College of Management at NC State University. He started a Performing Arts Scholarship at Elon University and funded the Roberts Theater at Elon. He was a generous supporter of Providence Day School and to the American Heart Association. Mr. Hunt was an Emeritus Member of Myers Park Country Club, serving as its president in 1982. He loved living on Lake Norman, golfing, boating, fishing, and watching sports, (especially NC State and Panthers football).

Besides his parents, Mr. Hunt was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Shirley Nunnery Hunt; sisters: Mildred Eyer, Dorothy Creech, Katherine Edwards, Christine Travis, Virginia Hones, Annie Hunt, Agness Hunt and brother, Bill Hunt. Mr. Hunt is survived by his son: Ernie Hunt, III and daughter-in-law, Denise, and their children Erin and Chandler; daughter: Amy Hunt Roberts and son-in-law Dr. William Roberts and their daughter, Jennifer; sisters Janie Clark and Peggy Williams.

The family would like to thank Jackie Kirk and Laurie Davis for the love and kindness they showed Mr. Hunt these last few years.

A Celebration of Mr. Hunt’s life will take place on Sunday, August 5, 2018 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Peninsula Yacht Club 18501 Harbor Light Blvd. Cornelius. NC. 28031. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Hunt’s memory can be made to the American Heart Association, Novant Health Foundation Hospice or Providence Baptist Church 4941 Randolph Road. Charlotte, NC. 28211 would be deeply appreciated. The Good Samaritan Funeral Home in Denver is serving the Hunt Family.
