Joseph D. Cutonilli

Joseph D. Cutonilli, of Denver, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on July 3 at the age of 94.

Born on May 25, 1932, in Giuliano di Roma, Italy, Joseph was the son of the late Tommaso Cutonilli and Gentilina Guglielmi. He was the youngest of three children and was preceded in death by his beloved sisters, Maria Pia and Giannina.

In 1946, Joseph immigrated to the United States with his father, settling in Buffalo, New York. After graduating from high school, he proudly served in the United States Air Force, where he was stationed in Greenland and worked in radar and sonar technology. Following his honorable discharge in 1956, he returned to Italy and married the love of his life, Lidia.

Joseph began a distinguished career in public service when he was appointed to the U.S. Consulate in Rome, where he served as a diplomat. His work later took him to Germany, supporting NATO operations during a pivotal period in international relations. In 1961, he returned to the United States and settled in Syracuse, New York, where he joined General Electric as a test engineer. Committed to lifelong learning, he continued his education at Syracuse University, earning professional certifications that further advanced his career. Working on highly sensitive military contracts requiring the highest levels of security clearance, Joseph earned the respect of colleagues for his expertise, dedication, and integrity. He enjoyed a successful career with General Electric before retiring after more than 20 years of service.

Following retirement, Joseph and Lidia moved to Fort Myers, Florida, where they enjoyed many happy years together. In recent years, he made his home in Denver, North Carolina, where he treasured spending time with family.

Joseph is survived by his devoted wife, Lidia, with whom he shared 68 wonderful years of marriage. He also leaves behind his five children: Genny Dausman (Robert), Stephen Cutonilli (Diana), Susan Jaquin (Michael), Thomas Cutonilli (Valerie), and Maria Cutonilli. He was a proud grandfather to six grandchildren and a loving great-grandfather to three great-grandchildren.

Above all else, Joseph loved his family. He took great pride in their accomplishments and cherished the time spent together. A faithful and devoted Catholic throughout his life, his faith was the cornerstone of his character and guided him in both his personal and professional endeavors. He was also a lifelong and enthusiastic Buffalo Bills fan, faithfully supporting his team through every season.

A private family funeral mass will be held at Holy Spirit Church on Friday, July 10. Joseph’s legacy of service, dedication, and unwavering love for his family will be remembered always.
