Isabel Caridad Martinez Roman

Isabel Caridad Martinez Roman of Denver, NC was called to be with our Lord on July 6, 2020. She went peacefully into the night surrounded by her family.

Isabel was born in Havana, Cuba to Inocencia and Gerardo Martinez on November 19, 1941. She married Orlando Roman on January 7, 1962.  Together they had 2 children.

After fleeing Cuba due to the communist regime, they migrated to New York City.  Isabel remained a homemaker until her children became of age.  At that point, she went back to school and earned a degree from International Career Institute in Fashion Design.  She worked as a sample maker in the garment district until she retired at 60.  After retirement, she became her only grandson’s nanny, caring for him to help her daughter and her husband pursued their careers.  Yeya, as she was lovingly called by her grandson, took him to school, class trips, afterschool activities, volunteered at school and drove him around until he was old enough to drive.

She loved sewing, knitting, crocheting and quilting. She shared a special bond with the ladies in these groups in Denver. She has shared the love of her talents with others by gifting them her treasures and passing along her craft.  She also was very involved in the Ladies’ Solidarity group at Holy Spirit, knitting baby blanket and chemo hats for the area hospitals.

Isabel is survived by her daughter Isabelle and her husband Alexander, her grandson Joel, her son Robert and his wife Wanda, her step-grandson Alexander, step-granddaughter Amanda, step-great grandson Eli, nieces and cousins. She loved them all passionately.

A memorial mass will be offered in her name at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Denver, NC on a later date.

Another memorial mass will be offered in her name, at a later time, at Incarnation Church, New York City, NY. Her ashes, as well as those of her parents, will be interred at St. Raymond’s Catholic Cemetery, Bronx, NY alongside her husband.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations to be made to the Levine Cancer Institute, 208 East Boulevard, Charlotte, NC 28203, Atriumhealthfoundation.org “Pancreatic Cancer”.

Isabel will be greatly missed by all. She was a very caring person. May her soul rest in eternal peace.

Isabel’s loving spirit and warmth will be sorely missed. Thankfully we have the knowledge of the full and generous life she led and the many meaningful memories shared to keep us going until we meet her again in God’s presence.
