Larry was born in Carmi, IL, an only son and youngest sibling to his four sisters. Larry was a beloved husband, grampa, brother, uncle and friend, but most of all, he was Daddo to all his girls. He enjoyed life which included living and traveling abroad. At age 19 he joined the United States Army and married his beloved Ree shortly after.  Larry loved his country and dutifully served in the United States Army for 23 years as a Signal Intelligence Voice Interceptor and retired as a Chief Warrant Officer 3 (CWO3).  He served most of his military career in Germany and Turkey. Stateside he was stationed at DLI Monterey, California, Vint Hill Farms Station, Virginia, Fort Meade, Maryland, Fort Hood, Texas, and Fort Huachuca, Arizona.

After his retirement, he and Ree visited some of the great gardens of the world with McDuff Tours. They took many Princess cruises and spent vacations in the Outer Banks with their family. While at home, they soaked up the serenity and birdsong of their own garden. He loved to fish (flyfishing in Montana or with his sons-in-law on the Shenandoah River), was an avid reader of political thrillers, a sharp card player, and a die-hard fan of John Wayne movies.

The family will receive family and friends, Tuesday, April 18, 2023 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m at Good Samaritan Funeral Home.

Once a soldier, always a soldier. One of Larry’s last wishes was to be laid to rest among soldiers. Larry will be interred with military honors on  Wednesday, April 19, 2023 11:00 a.m. at Salisbury National Cemetery Annex.

In lieu of flowers contributions in Larry’s name can be made to Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region – Lincolnton, NC 900 Dontia Drive, Lincolnton, NC 28092 or online at hpccr.org.

In Larry’s final days, Ree would read scripture and end their prayers holding his hand and reciting Psalm 23 together.

A Psalm of David

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. A time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot.
(Ecclesiastes 3:1-10)

“Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day…unseen, unheard, but always near, still loved, still missed and very dear”. UNK AUTHOR

Thinking and praying for all of you during this difficult time. What a wonderful life Uncle Larry had, and such wonderful memories he left for his family.

Larry was my OIC in the mid 1980s when I was stationed at Field Station Augsburg, I traveled with him to Ft. Meade in 1984 and to several conferences with our British Counterparts. I remember when he purchased a Toyota Minivan, which was a new concept, he was very proud of it and loved to show it off. He was excellent at encouraging your soldiers in their intelligence analysis, offering some pointers and then allowing them leeway. I never saw him angry at a subordinate. I can still here him saying “sounds like NCO business to me…” when it was time for a Sergeant to be a Sergeant. My heartfelt codolences go out to the family and friends. He will be the second friend I have that is interred in Salisbury, NC. I loved to hear the Turkey stories!
