Walter Howard Strader, age 83, passed away on July 23, 2026 at home in Denver, North Carolina. He was born on January 20, 1943 in Rock Island, Illinois, the son of Walter and Cleta Strader.
Walt lived most of his life in Southern California where he practiced engineering and progressed through leadership roles within three large international businesses.
In his spare time, he was an avid woodworker who built artistic furniture, a gourmet cook, and was active in The Catawbans men’s organization. He appreciated delicious food, good wine, an occasional scotch, and living on Lake Norman for 17 years. But what brought him the most joy was spending quality time with family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother Alberta Strader and stepsister Leta Mae Sax.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Suzan Strader; 3 sons, Vance Strader of Asheville, NC (Deborah), Matt Strader of Charlotte, NC (Rebecca), and Chad Strader of Napa, CA (Kristina); 6 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; 1 great grandson; along with many other family and friends who will dearly miss him.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Walt’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Urban Promise of Charlotte or VIA Hospice would be greatly appreciated.
