Lydia Smith Woerner

Lydia Smith Woerner, 97, of Charlotte passed away on January 15, 2025. She was born on September 30, 1928 in Philadelphia, PA to the late John Lane Smith Sr. and Elizabeth Vanaman Smith.

Lydia worked as a secretary at various locations over the years including places like WAME radio station, Pawtucket Elementary School, and Valleydale School. Her last employment was working part time as an usher for Ovens Auditorium where she worked till the age of 89. She loved Broadway plays and music, and this allowed her to share these experiences with many guests.

Lydia’s most prized and important occupation was being a wonderful and loving mom to her children and wonderful “Mimi” to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a wonderful cook who made sure there was always room for more friends and family at the table!

Her church, Christ United Methodist in Coulwood, was very important to her.

Lydia will be truly missed by not only the family, but to all that knew her. She moves onto her heavenly home now where the family knows she is at peace.

Besides her parents, Lydia is preceded in death by her husband, Phillip Albert Woerner and her sister Joan Smith McBride.

Left to cherish her memory are her children Lisa Woerner, Erik Woerner (Gale), Gretchen Looper (Mark), Philip Woerner (Karren), and Todd Woerner (Susan); her brother John Lane Smith Jr. (Jay); and her 8 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Lydia’s memory can be made to Atrium Health Hospice and Palliative Care Cabarrus or Christ United Methodist Church.
