Johnnie Thomas Poythress passed away peacefully on March 17, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born on August 17, 1941, in Laurinburg, North Carolina, to the late Tom and Annie Poythress.
John was a man of deep faith who loved God, his family, and the simple joys of life-especially camping and spending time outdoors. He will be remembered for his steady presence, humor, and his devotion to those he loved, and the values he lived by every day.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother.
John is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Brenda Poythress, whose life was beautifully intertwined with his. He also leaves behind his daughters, Mary Benchtle (husband Dave), Jennifer Sheppard, and Wendy Hester (husband Michael), who carries forward his legacy of love and strength.
He was a proud grandfather to Coleman (wife Taylor), Kaitlyn (fiancé Mason), Braylon, Clara, and Joe, and a cherished great grandfather to five great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense joy.
John’s life was a testament to faith, family, and quiet strength. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.
Visitation will take place on Monday, March 23, 2026 from 12:00PM to 1:00PM at The Good Samaritan Funeral Home. A celebration of life service will begin at 1:00PM.
